First, realize and agree that the world is not in a good state. Corruption, greed, concentration of power, and deception have consumed many.
Stop using products from big tech companies. Many evil things can be directly or indirectly attributed to them.
Support your local businesses and help them grow. If everyone focuses on their own community, big tech and greedy rich people will not be able to create a monopoly on anything, or at the very least, it will become much harder for them.
Build your own business around anything people use, especially the types of services that big tech currently provides.
The world really needs the following kinds of alternatives:
Cloud Computing
Imagine if regular people started offering their computers as a compute service, with all these computers connected in a decentralized manner. When you need computing power, you could search and get a list of options from around the world. These would be regular people’s computers. When you use their computer, you pay them. No greedy big tech would be involved. This would be a decentralized, global, unified cloud computing system.
An Open Ecosystem of Software
X-Calendar (from X company/org), Y-Maps, and Z-Drive should be able to share data and be completely interoperable.
Just build, build, and build. If someone decides to leave big tech, there should be alternatives that are as good as, or better than, what they are leaving behind.
All systems should be built to be decentralized by nature and able to communicate with each other.
For example, consider a social media platform. Each local community could have its own centralized instance for the social network. It is critically important that all the data and physical infrastructure remain within that locality. All other local instances would be able to communicate with each other through a shared protocol. This way, no big tech company can use your data to build things that make the world dystopian. Whatever you build, make it local first, and then provide a way for it to talk to other instances through a standard protocol.
A new type of software license is needed that promotes decentralized software and systems. Fundamentally, it will prevent others from using your free software to run a centralized system without being connected to the whole decentralized network. To prevent misuse, there should be a limit on the maximum number of people it can serve on one instance and they can't serve more than 1 (or some constant number) instance. For example, it can register no more than 100,000 users. If there are more users, another business, entrepreneur, or specialized person from that community can take the software, raise money from the people, buy hardware, and run their own instance. We MUST ensure that people who are maintaining these instances are not connected in any way, else it becomes a hidden monopoly.
Monetize your products. What model should you use? Anything, really: subscription, donation, ads, whatever works. Otherwise, it may not be sustainable. You should be able to make money for yourself with your expertise. Just be ethical and moral.
If you do, nothing will change. Those big tech companies have billions of users. Practically, you will not be able to get that many users. You must connect your centralized instance with the global decentralized system so that overall it becomes decentralized. People are free to choose your service or others, or if they are capable, they can create their own instance. A system, that has 1,000 instance, each having 10,000 user, has 10,000,000 users. For each instance maintainer, the cost is only for the 1000 people they serve. I think it is an extremely sustainable model.
Don't take funding from them. Don't include them. Don't give them any share.
Raise awareness. Talk to people about these ideas.
It may seem hard. But it has to be tried, and it is needed.
